All persons starting work for the first time in the temporary traffic management industry, and those persons that do not hold any NHSS 12 registration cards, intending to work in either sector scheme 12a/b, 12d or 12c environments.

NHSS 12 Temporary Traffic Management Basic Course (TTMBC)
This half-day, classroom-based course is the essential entry point into the temporary traffic management (TTM) industry. It gives learners the foundational knowledge needed to work safely and competently on the highway network as a trainee, operating under a qualified operative or supervisor across the various NHSS 12 schemes (12A/B, 12C and 12D).
Who should attend
Anyone starting work for the first time in the temporary traffic management industry, or anyone who does not currently hold a valid NHSS 12A/B/C/D registration card or certificate — including those whose NHSS 12 skills have lapsed by more than two years. There are no prerequisites for this course.
Please note: M7 is a standalone category and does not remove the requirement to complete TTMBC.

- Quality Assurance and the NHSS 12 framework
- Industry terminology and types of road
- Health, safety and environmental awareness
- TTM equipment, vehicles, usage and specifications
- Safety zones and basic principles of temporary traffic management
- Site practices, maintenance and vehicular access/egress of worksites
- The risk assessment process and personal protective equipment
On completion
Learners will have a working understanding of health, safety and environmental procedures, the highway environment, and the basic principles and practices of temporary traffic management — providing the grounding needed to progress onto an NHSS 12A/B, 12C or 12D operative course.
Recognised by National Highways, Transport Scotland, the Welsh Assembly and Transport NI across motorway, high-speed dual carriageway, rural and urban road networks.
